If a construction related business states that the design fees are given away (or included in the price*), it’s a reminder to you that they do not value their design services.
It is clear that if a client sees price is the determining factor for design fees then they do not value the design. Design, particularly architectural design, has great value. It isn’t always expensive, but it does have a cost.
The next time a contractor gives away the design, or the design fees are “included”, consider how much they value design. You get what you pay for…and do you want to pay for free design for something as expensive as a house, remodel or business?
How much does good design mean to you?
* You may not see it as a line item, but you’re paying for the design one way or another. Somebody pays the designers salary.
